Reggae music growing in Finland

The same day that I arrived in Finland, I was invited to a Jamaica team reception that was put on by the team's sponsor, Puma.

I heard reggae music when I walked into the reception and was surprised to learn that the set that was playing was called 'Fusion Sound' from Molynes Road in Kingston.

The two DJs, Ricardo 'Ricky Blacks' Cameron and Damian 'Silver' Anderson, also hail from Molynes Road. They explained that this was their second trip to Finland and that their sound was just a year old.

They were working as studio engineers with Oxygen Studio on 321 Molynes Road, when people from Finland saw them, liked their work and invited them to come to Finland.

Their main host is the president of fi-reggae.com in Finland, Riina Asamoa-Krodua. She explained that she promotes reggae sound clashes in Finland on a regular basis and that there are at least five Finnish reggae bands in Finland.

She promotes about five concerts a year and has brought such artistes as Sizzla, Luciano, Turbulence, Tony Rebel, the Skatalites, Eek-a-Mouse, TOK, Culture, Israel Vibration to Finland and that Jah Mason was due to perform here next week. She said that the music was really catching on in Finland. (HUOM! ASIAVIRHE...SUURIN OSA NOISTAHAN ON FRANCIKSEN TUOMIA ARTISTEJA...KYSYMYS OLI SIITÄ ETTÄ KETÄ TÄÄLLÄ ON OLLUT, EI ETTÄ KETÄ MÄ OLEN HENK.KOHT TUONUT...MENI TOIMITTAJALTA SIT ASIAT SEKASIN).

Is Jamaica losing reggae?

By Steven Jackson Sunday Observer writer
Sunday, November 22, 2009

Few Jamaicans chart in Japan, US and Europe signalling, as pundits suggest, that international reggae doesn't need Jamaica.

The charts in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand, up to yesterday, had only one Jamaican-born artiste - Bob Marley - in the top ten. The US and France were also low at three and four Jamaicans charting respectively in those top ten charts.

Contrastingly, countries with less vibrant indigenous reggae scenes relied on Jamaican artistes to fill the top ten such as the Netherlands at eight and Belgium and Spain both at seven.

The Observer analysed iTunes Reggae Album charts in 22 countries and found that on average four Jamaicans chart in the top 10. iTunes is a popular online music store which has readily available chart data.

"It is true that very often what you hear is indigenous (Swiss) reggae on radio," Swiss musicologist, journalist and historian Marc Ismail said of his country. Ismail was responding to an Observer query at a public lecture in Kingston. "...but the role of Jamaica would still be important."

As a result, Jamaica's role is less entertainment and more education for the Swiss reggae artistes and instrumentalists.

"It is these very same bands are listening day and night to Jamaican music. they would add their own influences and language," said Ismail. "These bands are still rooted in Jamaica. I never heard of a reggae band who is not (learning) from these bands ...even if their music sounds different."

Earlier this month entertainment specialist, Charles HE Campbell said that Jamaica needed new strategies to penetrate the European market. "The very success of reggae in the European market could spell the reduction of market share for Jamaican acts in the future," he stated in his Observer column this month. "Unless we review and adjust our business, production and promotional strategies aimed at that continent Jamaica runs the risk of forfeiting considerable market share to European reggae artistes and bands who have become extremely popular in these domestic markets."

Jamaican artistes on iTunes Reggae Album charts include:

. US with (3/10), Bob Marley (two albums[X]) and Damian Marley;
. UK with (6/10), Bob Marley (X2), Jimmy Cliff, John Holt, Sean Paul and Jah Cure;
. France with (4/10) Bob Marley (X3) and Sean Paul;
. Germany with (1/10) Bob Marley;
. Australia (3/10) Bob Marley (X2) and Sean Paul;
. Austria with (1/10) Bob Marley;
. Belgium with (6/10) four Bob Marley (X4) and Sean Paul (X2);
. Canada with (4/10) two Bob Marley (X2), Stephen Marley and Damian Marley;

. Finland with (5/10) Bob Marley (X2), Damian Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Elephant Man;

^^Hain duuniin Wärtsilän projektiin, kun he pystyttivät dieselvoimalaa (tai -voimaloita) Jamaikalle 15 vuotta sitten. Ainakin Kingstoniin ja Old Harbouriin kohosi tuolloin waasalaiset dieselvoimalat. FR:n nimimerkki Huppehan on ollut duunissa Kingstonissa Kalmar Industriesien eli nykyisen Cargotecin leivissä. Kingstonin satamaan tuli pystytettyä jos jonkinmoista hämähäkkikurkea.

Pakko heittää vielä rispektit yhdelle Suomi-Jamaika-yhteyksien luojalle eli Paltilan Juhalle, joka tarjos mulle tuossa esitteessä mainitun NAPS-aurinkoenergiasysteemin myyntitykin uraa Jamaikalla 90-luvun puolivälissä. Juha, Ripa ja parikymmentä suomalaista hotellijohtajaa oli samoihin aikoihin majoittuneena Kingstonin Christar Villassa Hope Roadilla. Käytiin kimpassa legendaarisella Mirage-klubilla. Viimeks muutama kuukausi sitten istuskelin Christarin tokan kerroksen raflassa ihastellen Blue Mountainia ja muita Kingstonia ympäröiviä kohoumia.

Christopher Martin, Gentleman to tour Europe

Thursday, October 21, 2010

JAMAICAN MUSIC sensation Christopher Martin heads to Europe this winter for five solo shows and then joins European reggae star Gentleman as they embark on a multi-city European tour in November and December.

Christopher Martin and Gentleman have seen significant success in their careers as individual artiste but recently teamed up and merged their solo success and created a number one hit song called To The Top. The video, shot in Marrakech, Morocco saw the two blending their musical styles with the captivating backdrop of the ancient city. This November, Christopher Martin and Gentleman will further emphasise their collaborative genius on stages all over Europe.

Christopher Martin will start his tour of Europe, solo, for five shows beginning on October 30 in Mannheim, Germany. Martin then moves to Cologne, Germany on November 2, Oslo in Norway on November 5, back to Cologne on November 6 and finally in Helsinki, Finland on November 7.

The intensity of the tour will increase when Martin joins Gentleman on his Diversity tour from November 18 to December 22. This is the second leg of the tour with the first leg, a six-week summer tour, being sold. The upcoming tour will see Christopher Martin and Gentleman taking the stage in nine countries for 22 shows. The two will perform in Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland, Spain, Luxemburg, Poland, Macedonia, and the Czech Republic.

Gentleman's latest album Diversity entered the German Album Charts directly in pole position. This year MTV pays tribute to the artiste and, for the first time, Gentleman is nominated in the category "Best German Artiste" for the MTV European Music Awards in Madrid on November 11, 2010.

Asked how he feels about being part of such a high-profile tour, Christopher Martin says he is glad for the chance to show the world his music: "I am really happy for this opportunity, the song I did with Gentleman has really opened many doors for me and this tour will open more doors. I have never been on a tour of this magnitude, I know it will be a challenge but I am ready for it, keeping fit and getting ready to give the European fans my all."

Christopher Martin, who has notched up numerous hits both in Europe and Jamaica, is now considered one of the new crop of stars who will carry on the legacy of Jamaican music in Europe.

En oo huomannut näin jälkikäteen raportteja Mika Häkkisen vierailusta Jamaikalla ja Kingstonissa viime maanantaina. Ennakkoon oli joitakin artikkeleja ainakin Observerissa. Häkkinen kuitenkin kävi (tai on edelleen käymässä - onhan hän varmaan lukenut fi-reggaestä, ettei Jamaikalle kannata mennä paria viikkoa lyhyemmälle reissulle) Jamaikalla, kuten näistä 'Join The Pact'-kampanjan kuvista Facebookissa voi päätellä:

[www.facebook.com]

Erittäin tärkeällä asiallahan Häkkinen on liikkeellä.

Zip FM:ltä tuli just Finlandia-votkamainos. Tais olla joidenkin Liguanea Clubilla pidettävien bileiden sponsorina tms.

Ehkä tähän yhteyteen sopii vielä pieni tarina, kuulin nimittäin vuos sitten Santa Cruzin liepeillä matkustaessani radiosta Finlandia-hymnin. Se tuli gospelasemalta jota route taxin kuski luukutti kaahatessaan mutkaista maalaistietä.
